We hear a lot about Kathryn Kuhlmann and Maria Woodworth-Etter, but there also was a black woman that God had his hands mightily upon named Elder Lucy! Her ministry is a legacy of hope and dreams come true!
Lucy Turner-Smith, also known as Elder Lucy Smith, was the first black woman to build and pastor a megachurch, in Chicago, called All Nations Pentecostal Church. She saw an estimated 200,000 miracles and healing in her ministry.
The most significant encouragement from Elder Lucy Smith was, “just be yourself.”
Lucy was known to have little regard for proper grammar and never tried to be oratorical. She would talk calmly and move around as she preached or ministered, but when she prayed for the sick, all manners of sickness and disease would be healed.
Lucy was born on 14 January 1875 in Woodstock, Georgia, and her birth name was Lucinda Madden. She was born in a little one-room log cabin, where she and 5 siblings were raised by their single mother. Lucy gave her life to the Lord when she was 12 and went to school for the first time when she turned 13. She went on to marry and have nine children, but her husband left them, and she decided to move to Chicago in 1910.
After being in the city for a couple of years, Elder Lucy joined a predominantly white Pentecostal church called Stone Church. It was known for its incredible healing services. The most well-known divine healing ministers of the time regularly ministered there: William Seymour, Smith Wigglesworth, John G. Lake, and Maria Woodworth-Etter. In this atmosphere of miracles, Lucy received her unique calling into the divine healing ministry.
Lucy began a one-room prayer meeting in her own house with only two people. The size of the meeting grew fast, as many were being healed and baptized with the Holy Ghost. Three years later, they moved out to a larger facility. After 10 years, in 1926, she built a $65,000 church (equivalent to one million dollars today). By the 1930s, the church had nearly 5,000 members. Lucy said that the healing services were the reason for such growth.
Elder Lucy Smith
The healing services at All Nations Pentecostal Church were phenomenal. Elder Lucy Smith would hold healing services three times a week. The deaf, the blind, the crippled, the lame, stroke victims, and those with goitres and cancers were healed weekly. The church basement was decorated with crutches and canes that were left behind by those who were healed. Lucy travelled across Illinois and abroad, taking God’s healing power and seeing several hundred healed and saved. She was popular with people of all classes and colours who would come from near and far.
God spoke to Lucy and told her to broadcast the services over the radio. This broadcast became known as The Glorious Church of the Air radio program in 1933. It was the first LIVE service to be broadcast from a black church. She received letters from all over the country, telling how people had been healed as she prayed. The radio program also helped fund the tremendous charity work the church did. They fed thousands of people during the Great Depression and provided food and clothing to black families in the city.
Lucy Smith is a primary example of what tremendous exploits God can do with a simple, yielded vessel. She didn’t try to be more than she was. She knew what she was called to, and she stuck to it. Lucy died on 18 June 1952, and over 60,000 people came to show their respects. It was the largest funeral in Chicago history.
God uses those who are available and obedient. He qualifies them for their calling with HIS ANOINTING!

Overland Missions Conference
Chaque année, en janvier, nous organisons la Conférence annuelle des missions terrestres, une conférence à l’intention des missionnaires pour les rassembler des nations éloignées, pour inspirer, remplir et partager leur vision. Cette année, il a eu lieu à Jacksonville, en Floride.
La Conférence et la Retraite du Personnel est un moment puissant de rassemblement pour adorer, projeter une vision, s’entraîner et rattraper l’équipe internationale. Chaque session de conférence était édifiante, transformationnelle et vivifiante! Nous mettons en lumière quelques-uns des messages ici pour vous, parce que nous savons que vous serez bénis par leur contenu, aussi.
C’est toujours un moment incroyable de culte et de pression dans les choses de Dieu pour l’année à venir, mais c’est aussi génial d’être juste ensemble avec la grande équipe.

Note rapide : Si vous avez reçu mes bulletins pendant un certain temps, vous remarquerez que tous les quelques mois Overland Missions accueille une conférence ou Revival Week, et ces semaines sont concentrées, mais occupé! Je réalise que ce n’est plus très courant dans l’église d’avoir des réunions de réveil qui durent littéralement toute la journée pendant plusieurs jours. Cela arrive ici et là, mais ce n’est tout simplement pas « normal » pour la plupart. Nous nous sentons chanceux d’avoir été cultivés à nous attendre à ce genre de réunions. Ils sont si bons pour tant de raisons, mais surtout – l’intention vers la présence de Dieu, parce qu’il est impératif d’être réellement dans le fleuve de Dieu si nous voulons être féconds et productifs dans le ministère.
Overland Missions Magazine de fin d’année 2022
Overland Missions vient de publier notre rapport général annuel, qui se présente toujours sous la forme d’un beau magazine. J’aime feuilleter ce document avec une tasse de thé à la main, me laissant inspirer par les choses incroyables que notre équipe mondiale accomplit. C’est tout simplement incroyable, chaque année!
En octobre de l’année dernière, Overland Missions a accueilli le tout premier rassemblement international de monarques tribaux au même endroit! Rois, reines et chefs de toute l’Afrique se sont réunis à Lusaka, en Zambie, sous le nom du Roi des Rois : JÉSUS ! De ce rassemblement est né l’appel des missionnaires – l’appel des Macédoniens africains ! Les rois (même des nations fermées) disent : “VENEZ ! Notre peuple a besoin de l’Évangile!”
Les retombées pour notre équipe à l’échelle mondiale cette année sont tout simplement folles, et ce qui est dans cette vidéo n’est que le début. Overland Missions a réalisé ce mini-documentaire qui raconte l’histoire jusqu’à maintenant!

Alors que je suis aux Etats-Unis, je suis disponible pour visiter les églises, les partenaires, et pour exercer mon ministère aussi souvent que j’en ai l’occasion, pour partager ce que le Seigneur fait en RD Congo et au-delà ! En janvier, lors de la retraite du personnel, nous avons pris une photo de groupe de tous les missionnaires qui sont actuellement aux États-Unis – notre équipe de missionnaires à temps plein vient d’atteindre la barre des 300 (plus 117 enfants missionnaires)! Les personnes sur cette photo sont environ les 3/4 de notre équipe mondiale, les autres servent toujours fidèlement dans leurs missions, soutenant le travail de ministère et de promotion du Royaume, alors que nous faisons la rotation des membres de l’équipe pour venir aux États-Unis pour faire des collectes de fonds, visiter les églises, petits groupes, familles et partenaires.
Partenaires du Royaume – vous faites partie de cette équipe ! Votre soutien et vos prières représentent le monde pour nous. En semant dans mon ministère, vous semez dans l’Évangile qui se répand dans chaque nation, tribu et langue !
Bien que j’aie travaillé fort pour réunir une équipe de soutien financier, et je suis vraiment reconnaissante pour chaque personne qui a semé dans ma vie et mon ministère, j’ai encore un montant mensuel important que je dois remplir pour répondre aux demandes du ministère d’ici la fin de janvier 2023. Pour vous encourager, j’aimerais vous rappeler la valeur du partenariat.
Les partenariats sont la relation spécifique entre les parties, qui implique une coopération étroite, et ils ont des droits, des responsabilités et des privilèges communs. Chaque personne qui participe à cette mission le fait avec ses finances et sa foi, qui forme une relation étroite de coopération.
Sans votre partenariat, beaucoup de vies resteraient intactes par l’Évangile. Votre prière jette les bases de toute relation qui se construit sur le terrain, de chaque individu qui est disciple et de chaque bastion ennemi qui est détruit. Vos finances élargissent notre portée au ministère — elles nous aident à faire le plein de véhicules qui peuvent gérer les terrains difficiles, elles achètent des bibles pour les chefs, les rois et les ministres, elles nourrissent et habillent les veuves et les orphelins, elles équipent, elles habilitent, et il permet aux missionnaires avec des troupes sur le terrain de faire tout ce qu’il faut pour apporter l’Evangile du Royaume à ces régions périphériques.
Ce qui est le plus étonnant, c’est que, comme nous assumons tous les responsabilités de ce partenariat particulier, nous participons aux fruits et à la récolte qui sont produits. Chaque personne qui est sauvée, guérie ou libérée est une victoire et une célébration que vous pouvez partager ! Dieu honore les partenariats et récompense chacun en conséquence. Vous faites grand!

• Veuillez continuer à prier pour la moisson ici en RDC ! Il y en a beaucoup qui cherchent la Vérité, même si génération après génération a endurci leurs cœurs contre l’exploitation. Il y a déjà le grondement du réveil dans l’Esprit.
• Priez pour les ouvriers – nous faisons confiance à Dieu pour ajouter à notre équipe ! Nous sommes activement à la recherche de personnes pour rejoindre notre équipe ici en RDC avec des bottes sur le terrain ! Soyez avec nous dans la foi pour une équipe qui aime Dieu, et qui aime son peuple, qui se sent spécifiquement appelé à vivre et à travailler ici avec nous.
• Le peuple congolais – parmi les Congolais il y a beaucoup de peuples religieux, mais il est né d’années de tradition, manque de relation et de profondeur, et est souvent accompagné par l’occulte. Pourtant, cela prouve le désespoir pour une Vérité qui est plus profonde que la surface. Continuez à prier pour cette nation merveilleuse, afin que leurs cœurs soient livrés à l’Esprit Saint et qu’ils s’emparent de la Vérité.

Overland Missions Conference
Every January we have the annual Overland Missions Conference – a conference for missionaries to gather them from outlying nations, to inspire, fill and share vision. This year it was held in Jacksonville, Florida.
Conference and Staff Retreat is a powerful time of coming together to worship, cast vision, train, and catch up with the international team. Every conference session was edifying, transformational, and life-giving! We’re highlighting a few of the messages here for you, because we know that you’ll be blessed by their content, too.
It is always an amazing time of worship and pressing into the things of God for the upcoming year, but it’s also great just to be together with the greater team.

Quick Note: If you’ve received my newsletters for a while, you’ll notice that every few months Overland Missions hosts a Conference or Revival Week, and those weeks are focused but busy! I realise that it’s not very common in the church any more to have revival meetings that literally last all day for several days. It happens here and there, but it’s just not “normal” for most. We feel fortunate that we’ve been cultured to expect and anticipate these kinds of meetings. They’re so good for so many reasons, but mainly – the intentionality toward the presence of God, because it is imperative to actually be in the river of God if we want to be fruitful and productive in ministry.
Overland Missions End Of Year Magazine 2022
Overland Missions just released our annual general report, which always comes packaged in the form of a beautiful magazine. I love to leaf through this document with a cup of tea in hand, letting myself be inspired by the incredible things that our global team is accomplishing. It is nothing short of amazing, every single year!
In October of last year, Overland Missions hosted the first-ever international gathering of tribal monarchs in one place! Kings, Queens, and Chiefs from all over Africa gathered in Lusaka, Zambia, under the name of the King of Kings: JESUS! From this gathering, came the call for missionaries – the African Macedonian call! Kings (even from closed nations) are saying, “COME! Our people need the Gospel!”
The fallout for our team globally this year is just wild, and what’s in this video is only just the beginning. Overland Missions has put together this mini-documentary that tells the story so far!

While in the States, I am available to visit churches, and partners, and to minister as often as I have the opportunity, to share what the Lord is doing in DR Congo and beyond! If you would like me to speak at your house, Bible study group, or church, please reach out! I’d love to meet with as many of you as possible!

Kingdom Partners
This January, while at Staff Retreat, we took a group photo of all the missionaries who are currently in the United States – our team of full-time missionaries has just hit the 300 mark (plus 117 missionary kids)! The people in this photo are about 3/4 of our global team, the rest are still faithfully serving in their assignments, upholding the work of ministry and advancing the Kingdom, as we rotate team members to come out to the States to do fundraising, visit churches, small groups, families, and partners.
Kingdom Partners – you are a part of this team! Your support and prayers mean the world to us. By sowing into my ministry, you are sowing into the Gospel being spread to every nation, tribe, and tongue!
While I’ve been working hard to raise a team of financial support, and I am truly thankful for each who has sown into my life and ministry, I still have a large monthly amount that I need to fulfil to meet the demands of ministry by the end of January 2023. As an encouragement, I’d like to remind you of the value of partnership.
Partnerships are the specific relationship between parties, involving close cooperation, and it has joint rights, responsibilities, and privileges. Each person who partners with this mission does so with their finances and their faith, which forms a close relationship of cooperation.
Without your partnership, many lives would remain untouched by the Gospel. Your prayer lays the foundation for every relationship that is built on the ground, every individual that is discipled, and every enemy stronghold that is torn down. Your finances expand our reach in ministry — it helps us to fuel up vehicles that can handle the tough terrains, it buys Bibles for Chiefs, Kings, and Ministers, it feeds and clothes widows and orphans, it equips, it empowers, and it enables missionaries with boots on the ground to do whatever it takes to bring the Gospel of the Kingdom to these outlying areas.
The most amazing part is that, as we are each fulfilling the responsibilities of this specific partnership, we are partakers of the fruit and the harvest that is being produced. Every single person that is saved, healed, or set free, is a victory and a celebration that you get to share in! God honours partnerships and rewards each accordingly. You’re doing great!

• Pray for labourers — we are trusting God to add to our team! We are actively looking for people to join our team here in DRC with boots on the ground! Please stand with us in faith for a team who loves God, and who loves His people, who feel specifically called to live and work here with us.
• The Congolese people — among the Congolese there are many religious peoples, but it’s birthed out of years of tradition, lacking relationship and depth, and is often accompanied by the occult. Yet it proves desperation for a Truth that is deeper than the surface. Please continue to pray for this wonderful nation, that their hearts will be yielded to the Holy Spirit, and that they will take hold of the Truth.
